Use of ASCA Ethical Standards
One of the biggest obligations that a school counselor has to her students is to foster an environment of trust and confidence. It is my responsibility as mentioned by ASCA (2005), to inform students in terms they can understand the limits of their confidentiality in order for them to decide if they want to participate in the counseling session (pg. 143). Assessing when to breached confidentiality can be somewhat challenging for the counseling. Regardless of the student’s level of seriousness when talking about being harmed, harming self or harming others, the counselor has the legal and ethical responsibility to speak to parents and consult with fellow counselors. Below are two situations that came up during my internship at Mariner and how I decided to handle these situations based on the ASCA Model.
